Is Health Insurance Right for You?

Nov 17, 2025 | Managing Your Finances

Your health is one of your most valuable assets – and it’s something we often take for granted until it’s less than optimal. If illness or injury stops you from doing the things you love, insurance could be the missing ingredient that makes all the difference.

New Zealand’s public health system is among the best in the world, but it may not meet every medical need. That’s where private health insurance can play an important role.

How the health system works

In New Zealand, most healthcare needs are covered either by the public system or by ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation). Emergency or urgent care is handled publicly – no questions asked. But for non-urgent issues, like hip replacements, hysterectomies or MRI scans, you’ll usually need to go through an assessment process and qualify for elective treatment – many of which come with longer wait times.

ACC, on the other hand, covers treatment, rehabilitation, and residential care costs that relate specifically to accidental injuries.

Where health insurance fits in

Health insurance helps cover the gaps that exist when relying solely on the public system. If you’re diagnosed with a non-acute condition, you could be waiting months – or even years – for publicly funded treatment. Private healthcare can help you move faster, but that often comes with a significant price tag.

That’s where private health insurance steps in. It can:

• Provide faster access to treatment

• Reduce out-of-pocket costs for private care

• Give you more control over when and where you receive treatment
